Making your own soap (cold saponification)
Caustic soda (sodium hydroxide) is a key ingredient in artisan soap making. It reacts with oils to create solid soap. Safe handling required.
CAUTION : Dangerous product, handle with care

Instructions :

Equipment preparation :
Wear gloves, goggles and an apron.
Work in a well-ventilated area.
Prepare your oils and fats at room temperature, and a scale to weigh the soda and water accurately.

Mixing the soda and water :
In a heat-resistant container (stainless steel or glass), slowly pour the soda into the water while stirring. A chemical reaction will release heat. Allow the mixture to cool to around 40-50°C.
Warning : Always add caustic soda to water, never the other way round to avoid dangerous splashes.

Mixing with oils :
Heat the oils or fats to the same temperature as the soda solution (40-50°C).
When both are at the same temperature, pour the soda solution into the oils while mixing.
Use an immersion blender to achieve the trace, slight thickening of the soap paste.

Moulding :
Pour the mixture into silicone moulds or other suitable materials.
Cover the moulds and leave to rest for 24 to 48 hours.

Curing :
Unmould your soaps, then leave to dry (cure) for 4 to 6 weeks to complete the saponification process and harden the soaps.
